Lenten Resources for the Whole Family

Women:

Take Up and Read: Above All

*I was given a copy of Above All in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own.

Whether you desire to spend time alone in the morning with the Lord and coffee, need a guide to help you pray during Eucharistic Adoration or you are searching for a devotional to share with a group of women throughout Lent, Above All is the perfect selection. Above All is a Lenten devotional journal from Take Up and Read that includes daily Scripture passages (set in context with enlightening historical notes to deepen your understanding), as well as devotional essays, room to journal, and space to organize your time. There is a simple prompt for the ancient prayer form of Lectio Divina each day, as well as a separate page for the fifth stage, Actio, where the reader is encouraged to examine her conscience and offer forgiveness to herself and to others.

Men:

Manual for Spiritual Warfare

The Catholic Hipster Handbook

Drinking with the Saints

although this book may not exactly sound “holy”, I found it to be fascinating.  It has information about saints for each day of the year and the background given that connects the drink to the saint is truly eye opening.  It’s a great resource – even if you’re not a drinker!

Everyone:

The Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy

Tweens and Young Teens:

Be Yourself: A Journal for Catholic Girls

MISSION:CHRISTIAN February-March: A Journal for Catholic Kids on a Mission (Volume 7)

I HIGHLY recommend these journal pens from DaySpring Illustrated Faith Journal Pens

for anyone who enjoys prayer journaling!

The Be Yourself Journal contains 20 prayerful coloring pages!

Parents and Children:

As mentioned in The Ultimate Lent Guide for Busy People,   reading books based on faith to children can be beneficial to both the adult and child.

Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.”

Matthew 18:17

Here are some books to bring into your nightly routine during Lent:

Molly McBride and the Party Invitation

(newest in the Molly McBride series – Molly McBride and the Purple Habit and Molly McBride and the Plaid Jumper can also be purchased on Amazon)!

Heaven is for Real

If You Had Five Minutes . . . What Would You Do?

Catholic Saints for Children

This is a wonderful practice my husband does with our son.  Each night before bed, he reads him a story and he reads about one Saint.  Often, my husband will come down after tucking our 5 year old in and tell me the Saint he read about and what he found interesting about him or her!

The Story of Saint John Paul II: A Boy Who Became Pope

The All Saints Day Party

although All Saints Day is in November, this is a great deal on Amazon right now, and talks about several Saints in the school setting.

The Little Flower: A Parable About Saint Therese

the illustrations and message in this book are beautiful!

Paddy and the Wolves:A Story about Saint Patrick When He Was a Boy

since Saint Patrick’s Day falls within Lent, it’s the perfect time of year to read about this legendary saint.  This book imagines Saint Patrick as a young boy, weaving a story that uses the saint’s childhood adventures to foreshadow events in Saint Patrick’s adult life. It used the prayer of St. Patrick (Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me . . .) as part of the journey young St. Patrick takes with his adult shepherd friend.

Another Saint Patrick book: The Secret of the Shamrock

A Children’s Bible

These two were recommended: The Read and Learn Bible and the Catholic Book of Bible Stories

Mary and the Little Shepherds of Fatima

Saintly Rhymes for Modern Times

There’s something about a book that rhymes!

Adventures of Faith, Hope, and Charity: Finding Patience (Volume 1)

Easter Bunny’s Amazing Day

Meet the Risen Jesus with an amazing bunny―and his amazing tale―in this beautifully illustrated hardcover children’s book

Amon’s Adventure: A Family Story for Easter

Journey to the Cross

I Can Be Happy, Too

In simple rhyme accompanied by Scripture verses and sweet, expressive illustrations, I Can Be Happy, Too teaches children that while we can’t control the bad things that happen to us, we can control how we respond to disappointment and adversity.

The Parable of the Lily

Here’s a fun activity to try with your child or children!  I got this idea because my son gets a “math calendar” from school each month.  Whenever we complete one of the challenges, he LOVES to check off that box.  Here is a chart of the books suggested (and some say faith book you already own or book from the library).  Let your child check off each reading and then leave the completed chart for the Easter Bunny (for an extra special treat of course)!  The printable is free – you just have to give your email address which will put you on my email list!

GUIDE: How to Plan your Own Prayer Wine Chocolate Retreat

Be Yourself! Journal

Journal for tweens and teens

I’m Amy Brooks, I connect Catholics! Make Catholic friends that love a GNO! Attend a retreat, start a parish group! Author of Be Yourself Journals 🙂

When I was a little girl, I vaguely remember a sil When I was a little girl, I vaguely remember a silver and blue medal fastened to my school uniform with a pin. My mom put that medal on my uniform. I don’t remember asking any questions, but I still think that blue was so pretty.
Fast forward about 9 years, and another memory surfaces… my Dad took our family to a church in a neighborhood we had to drive to. I remember parking across the street and entering the front doors of the @miraculousmedal Shrine. I recall the pads of paper placed on the marble in front of the different statues. These little memo 📝 pads were notes to God, asking Our Lady to intercede for us. I loved that I could write an intention but that one of the suggestions was “for a Catholic boyfriend” I was 15, I checked that box.
But honestly, I wasn’t a “Mary” person when it came to prayer.
Any personal prayer addressed Jesus or God.
10 years later my friend’s Mom gave me a Miraculous Medal keychain. I put it on my keys and life went on…

And over a decade later… it was that shrine I went to with this big idea about a Catholic gift guide and a giveaway.

But confession, many times in between those years each and every time I was going through something hard,I visited that place.
I poured my hearts desires on those little memo papers.
I asked Our Blessed Mother to pray for me.
I begged God to answer my prayers.

And He did.

Without me knowing the details of the Miraculous Medal.
But that time I went in there with the gift guide and giveaway idea… I was asked if I was only going to write one blog post.

That question inspired a second.
I researched the Miraculous Medal and read that Our Lady promised graces, especially to those who wore it around their neck.

More graces? Yes please

I wrote a post…” 5 Reasons Why I wear a Miraculous Medal and maybe You Should Too”.
Church Pop @churchpop asked if they could publish it.
It went viral… at least viral for me.

And a few weeks ago, I brought about 30 women there for a retreat.

I didn’t pursue Mary, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal… I pursued her Son.
My pursuit was sloppy.
Like any mother, she couldn’t resist helping me a little.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you

“I can’t go this year, but next year I hope to!” “I can’t go this year, but next year I hope to!”

I hear this every year when I’m planning the Prayer Wine Chocolate Retreat.

And every year I think…” I don’t know if I’ll be able to do this again next year.”

Each year- each day- is a gift.
Getting to plan a retreat for women that truly serves their minds, their souls and their hearts is truly a gift.
But the truth is, I never know if I’ll be given this gift again.

Jesus reminds us all in the Gospels that we all really don’t know what will happen in the future.
I don’t know what next year will bring…

But I do know that when women attend a Prayer Wine Chocolate Retreat for a day, they say things like

“I needed this”
“I would have paid you more”
“It’s like Christmas for Moms”

I understand life is busy. I feel strongly that the busyness is a distraction from the stillness Our Lord is calling us to.

If you really can’t attend this year’s Prayer Wine Chocolate Retreat, may I make a suggestion?

Get out your calendar and schedule a day to go to confession,
A day to go to Mass that is not Sunday,
A day to get together with someone else to pray the Rosary out loud and a day to spend time with another woman that needs your prayers.

All of these things are available on November 15th.
There’s still time to register!

If you want to join us this year, comment “Register “ and I’ll send you the details.

If you definitely can’t make it, drop a prayer intention in the comments- or message me- and we will bring your intentions with us!
