40 Prayer Journal Prompts for Lent (Part 1)

Lent can be the perfect season to increase prayer time in our lives.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church,

Lent is the primary penitential season in the Church’s liturgical year, reflecting the forty days Jesus spent in the desert in fasting and prayer

40 Prayer Journal Prompts for Lent (1)

If you have been thinking about starting a prayer journal, Lent is a great time to do so.
Through journaling, we can increase our prayer time and abstain from screen time.

*** Have a daughter, niece or young woman in your life that you love?  Gift her the Be Yourself: A Journal for Catholic Girls

Not sure where to start or what to write?

Here are some ideas that can help you!

(click here for free printable of all of these and part 2: Lent Prayer Journal Prompts)

  1.  Paste a picture of Jesus on the first page of your journal.  I love the image of Christ with the words, “Jesus I trust in You” underneath it.  It sets the tone for the whole book.  You can order this on Amazon here: Jesus, I trust in You holy card
  2. Draw or color a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and write the prayer “Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You” under the picture.  One website I love for pictures to color, cut and paste into my journal is: Look to Him and Be Radiant
  3. Copy the Morning Offering onto a page.  Decorate around it.  Read it slowly and pray it 🙂
  4. Write, “Dear Lord, Thank you for …” and list five blessings in you life.
  5. Choose a holy quote that you love and write it on it’s own page.  Use your handwriting or even stencils.  Yellow Pelican has an entire post titled 30 Quotes to Help You Journey Through Lent!  I’m sure you’ll find one there you like! Another collection of quotes can be found here: Bible Verses for Every Woman
  6. Copy this Prayer to the Holy Spirit:                                                                                       Breathe into me, Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy. Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy. Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy.
    Saint Augustine
  7. Write a letter to Jesus. Pour your heart out.  Try not to worry to much that “someone else may read this one day”.  It’s okay . . . give Jesus all of your worries and hopes. https://mailchi.mp/5a27d3a57afc/updated-signup-page
  8. Copy this prayer I found at Give Him 5’s Facebook page: “My Dearest Jesus,
Today, I want to be a light for you. Shine your love into my heart so that I may reflect that love to every person that I encounter. Amen.” Then draw a big picture of the sun and sky!
  9. Write down words to a song or hymn that really moves your heart.
  10. Find a holy card to a saint and copy the prayer that is on the back into your journal. Once you are done copying the prayer or novena, glue the picture of the saint on that page or the page adjacent to it.  Ask that saint to pray for a special intention in your heart.
  11. Write a letter to a Saint asking for prayers!
  12. Pray for all Holy Souls. Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family.
    Amen.
Learn more about this prayer here: Pray More Novenas
  13. You can now get 40 MORE PRAYER JOURNAL PROMPTS!
  14. Check out this awesome coloring page: What Lent Looks Like.  Take time to enjoy coloring it.  Paste it in your journal as a whole, or cut out each image seperately.  Perhaps glue one to the top of a page and write a personal reflection about that specific aspect of Lent.  For example: the sacrifice image – write a list of things you could sacrifice on that day.
  15. Color or paste a picture of the Crucifix on a page and then write the Prayer Before a Crucifix underneath.  If you subscribe to Look to Him and Be Radiant, Katie sends you a free ebook with many prayer cards you can color yourself.  One of those is the Prayer Before a Crucifix.
  16. Print out a picture of your family.  Glue it to a page and write a personal prayer for your family under it 🙂
  17. Spiritually Adopt a baby 🙂  Have fun naming him or her and come back often to this page to pray for this little one! See prayer and printable here: God Hears Us: A Spiritual Adoption Miracle {Free Printable}
  18. Saint Patrick’s Day!  Cut out or copy the Prayer of Saint Patrick and color or decorate the page with shamrocks! ♣ (See my Lent Pinterest board for ideas!)
  19. Write out the Our Father, then pray it slowly.
  20. Try a Lectio Divina exercise.  Here’s a great website that will guide you and give you personal reflection questions: Lectio Divina: Order of Carmelites
  21. Ask the Lord what He is calling you to do today.  Listen for 2 minutes . . . then write what comes to mind.
  22. Write another letter to Jesus.
  23. Dedicate a page to Our Blessed Mother. If there is a specific Title of Mary that resonates with you, choose that image.  Write a specific prayer dedicated to that title or write the Memorare.
  24. List five ways you would like to serve God this year.
  25. Choose one Station of the Cross to write about and reflect upon.
  26. The feast of Saint Joseph is March 19th, but honestly, I pray to him often!  I really like this prayer to him :

Oh St. Joseph whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires. Oh St. Joseph do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your divine son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, our Lord; so that having engaged here below your heavenly power I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of fathers. Oh St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while he reposes near your heart. Press him in my name and kiss his fine head for me, and ask him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for us.
Amen.

Love this, Amy!! I’m going to incorporate these into my daily routine!
I hate to admit it, but I’ve fallen in a bit of a rut with my prayer journaling… a whole bunch of rambling and not a whole lot of creativity. I want to make “Jesus Time” (that’s what my hubby calls it haha) fun and fruitful again!

Sometimes that’s exactly why you need a prayer journal though – simply to ramble to the Lord! He’s listening intently <3

Cheers to Friday! 🍷 I was SO EXCITED when a while Cheers to Friday! 🍷
I was SO EXCITED when a while back THE @stephanieweinert Stephanie Weinert tagged me in her #7quicktakes #sevenquicktakes #fridayintroductions post.

I’m jumping in today!

1. I recently took my own “headshots”. The first photo is one of MANY photos I took. It was super windy that day. If you need professional photos… give it a try - you can save a ton of $ this way! I used a tripod and my phone!

2. I see a lot of people posting photos of 2016. In 2016 I heard Gianna Emanuela (daughter of Saint Gianna) give a talk. I remember thinking, “her Dad sounds like a saint too!” I got to meet her. My husband and oldest son met her and asked her to pray that we could adopt again. 40 weeks later our twins were born!

3. Gianna Emmanuela is doing all she can to help the world see how holy her Father was. She has made prayer cards with Ecclesiastic approval. I’m asking Pietro Molla to intercede for a special intention. I will post more about this soon! He is such an inspiring man!

4. I have two guilty pleasures. I love getting my hair done and every once in a while I get a box from Stitch Fix. My coat was in one of those boxes.

5. I can’t remember all the pictures I chose for this post. I’m super forgetful. It’s not my age, I’ve always been this way. Saint Anthony is busy with just me most of the time.

6. We are taking our Christmas tree down this weekend. I loved our tree so much this year. My husband, all 3 children and me picked it out. We all agreed upon it and it really is so perfect.

7. I’m not so great at tech. I don’t know how to go back and see which pictures I posted without deleting this whole post. I promised after this post I would play a @saints.alive.pod episode for my daughter. I’m off to listen to another episode for at least the 3rd time. Hoping a new one comes out soon 😉

Thank you for reading all that! I’m so grateful you’re here! Tell me something about you!!!

Thank you Stephanie for tagging me months ago? ago… This is how behind I am on everything!

Why is it that girls can be SO MEAN!??? When I was Why is it that girls can be SO MEAN!???
When I was a “tween” I longed to fit in with the other girls that shared my interests… but, I was not welcomed.

It hurt. It hurt a lot.

I wondered why… why did they not want to be my friend?
Why wasn’t I considered “cool”?

I asked my mom… and her advice to me was, “Just Be Yourself “.

I know she wanted to help me… but I wish she not only said that, but handed me this book too.

That is why I wrote it.

God DOES have plans and talents unique to every person… but when we are young we are still discovering His call for us.

My Catholic faith saved me.

The wisdom of Our Lord and the Saints that surrendered their lives to Him are so helpful.

And the best part… learning this can be enjoyable!!!
If you know a young girl around the ages of 10 to 13 who is struggling… give them this book!

Buy it from me this week and I’ll mail it with a sticker and a holy card!

I highly recommend you add fun pens, markers, washi tape and other things found in a journal kit!
She’ll love it… and you will too!

Move over mean girls… our God is bigger than that drama!

When I was a little girl, I vaguely remember a sil When I was a little girl, I vaguely remember a silver and blue medal fastened to my school uniform with a pin. My mom put that medal on my uniform. I don’t remember asking any questions, but I still think that blue was so pretty.
Fast forward about 9 years, and another memory surfaces… my Dad took our family to a church in a neighborhood we had to drive to. I remember parking across the street and entering the front doors of the @miraculousmedal Shrine. I recall the pads of paper placed on the marble in front of the different statues. These little memo 📝 pads were notes to God, asking Our Lady to intercede for us. I loved that I could write an intention but that one of the suggestions was “for a Catholic boyfriend” I was 15, I checked that box.
But honestly, I wasn’t a “Mary” person when it came to prayer.
Any personal prayer addressed Jesus or God.
10 years later my friend’s Mom gave me a Miraculous Medal keychain. I put it on my keys and life went on…

And over a decade later… it was that shrine I went to with this big idea about a Catholic gift guide and a giveaway.

But confession, many times in between those years each and every time I was going through something hard,I visited that place.
I poured my hearts desires on those little memo papers.
I asked Our Blessed Mother to pray for me.
I begged God to answer my prayers.

And He did.

Without me knowing the details of the Miraculous Medal.
But that time I went in there with the gift guide and giveaway idea… I was asked if I was only going to write one blog post.

That question inspired a second.
I researched the Miraculous Medal and read that Our Lady promised graces, especially to those who wore it around their neck.

More graces? Yes please

I wrote a post…” 5 Reasons Why I wear a Miraculous Medal and maybe You Should Too”.
Church Pop @churchpop asked if they could publish it.
It went viral… at least viral for me.

And a few weeks ago, I brought about 30 women there for a retreat.

I didn’t pursue Mary, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal… I pursued her Son.
My pursuit was sloppy.
Like any mother, she couldn’t resist helping me a little.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you
No one is EVER beyond God’s abundant love, generos No one is EVER beyond God’s abundant love, generosity and power.
