Rachel’s Abortion Call and Message

Rachel was a full-time student and a serious athlete.  She had just been accepted into every nursing school to which she applied and she was very excited to pursue that education and eventually that career.  She had also just met and moved in with her boyfriend.

rachelathlete

Then, Rachel found herself pregnant.  The day Rachel found out she was expecting she remembers: shaking, feeling sick, scared and numb all at once.  This was not an ideal time to get pregnant – she was still in school, she had no money and not a lot of family support. Plus, things were not going all that great with her boyfriend.

I asked Rachel a lot of questions about the day she found out she was pregnant.  One of them was, “who did you tell first”?

Rachel first told her brother.  Her brother responded, “what are you going to do”?  She then told her boyfriend.  He didn’t believe her.  Eventually, when he finally did believe that she was expecting, they told his parents.

His parents response was similar to her brothers, but a little more harsh.  Rachel did not get a congratulations, a smile or a hug.  Rachel got a question – the question was: “what are you going to do about it”?

Although the word abortion was not said, it was heavily implied. And abortion was weighing on Rachel’s mind.  I asked Rachel if she had a debate inside her mind about having an abortion vs. not having one.  She said yes.  I asked her to share some of those thoughts, and she did:

If I have an abortion than having a child is over.  If I don’t have an abortion, what kind of life will this child have?  If I do have an abortion, I’ll always wonder . . .

All of these feelings and thoughts were on her mind – and while she felt scared, Rachel said she also felt numb.

Then one day she was driving and saw a billboard.  It read, “Considering Abortion” and had a phone number.  Rachel made the call.

A woman named Liz answered and talked to Rachel.  When I asked Rachel what she remembered about the phone call, she responded: “Liz wouldn’t let me off the phone.  Her voice was caring and she said she wanted to meet with me as soon as possible.”

Liz works for A Baby’s Breath.  A Baby’s Breath is a pro-life organization that has five pregnancy centers in the Philadelphia area.

Rachel made an appointment to meet with Liz at one of A Baby’s Breath’s centers the very next day.  There, she heard her baby’s heart beat.

At that moment, Rachel experienced total clarity.  She thought:

That heart is beating because my heart is beating.

For months Rachel continued to meet with Liz and visit A Baby’s Breath for counseling, guidance and support.

It was at A Baby’s Breath that she received the support and love that she had not received elsewhere.

rachelprego.jpg

Still, Rachel’s situation was the same.  Rachel was excited to start nursing school.  She didn’t have an income. Her living arrangements and relationship were unstable.  Rachel knew she had the potential and the path ahead to still achieve all her goals and in the timeline she had hoped.  With all of this in mind, Rachel started to consider an adoption plan for her baby.

This is how I met Rachel.  At one of her visits to A Baby’s Breath, Rachel mentioned that she was thinking about adoption.  The counselor there gave her our family’s profile.  She looked at it and commented how happy we looked.  She called me that night.

That conversation was so smooth.  It was like I was talking to an old friend.  She asked if Matt and I could meet with her to discuss adoption further.  Without hesitation, I said, “of course!”

Soon after that phone call, Rachel, Matt and I met at a coffee shop.  We shared a little bit about ourselves and discussed adoption.  Rachel said she was seriously considering it, but didn’t want to say it was definitely her plan.  During that meeting, my mother and father drove by the coffee shop we were meeting in, and saw a rainbow over it.  Somewhere else, a good friend looked outside and saw a rainbow.  She took a picture of it and said she immediately thought of me.

RainbowRachel.jpg

I thought the rainbow was a sign.  Matt and I tried not to get excited.  But, that is easier said than done.

Rachel and I texted back and forth a few more times.  Then, some time went by and I had not heard from her.

Rachel had her baby girl 3 weeks early. She chose to parent.  At first I cried.  I cried because I heard through the grapevine.  I cried because it has been a long 2 years of waiting.  I cried because that’s what you do.

Then, you move on.

But this time, my moving on was different. My moving on involved texting Rachel.  I wanted to still be friends.  I wanted to meet her daughter. I wanted to talk about the journey and celebrate motherhood with her.

I’m so happy to say that has happened.  I got to meet the beautiful baby girl.  I got to hold her! I get to cheer Rachel on because she is an awesome mother.

RachelAmyC.jpg

When I asked Rachel to share her story, she responded with an enthusiastic yes.  I asked if she would write a letter to who ever is considering abortion now.  She agreed, and asked if she could dictate while I wrote.  I did; and here it is.

A letter from Rachel to anyone considering abortion:

Dear Beautiful,

Please thoroughly read this letter and explore all options within your heart before making a decision that will shape your life forever.  There are positive and negatives to all the choices we make, however, the immense amount of joy and love that your own child will bring to you is second to none.  If you are not in the position to have a child right now you can always consider adoption.  At the very least you are adding another heart to a growing family.

I remember throughout my entire pregnancy being scared, terrified and very numb.  But, if you look within your heart the answer should come to you.

If you ever feel as though you need guidance there is always someone who will listen and help you along the way.*  From my own personal experience now having a daughter that is six weeks old has given me the companionship that I never had with my own mother.  Her dependency on me has made me a stronger person.  Bringing another life into this world is never a bad thing regardless of your circumstances.  People will rally around you and coach you every step of the way so you will never feel alone.  Even without a large family circle there are people that will support you and lift you up as if you were a part of their family.

Don’t let anyone make the decision for you.  Make the decision that is in your heart because, ultimately, you have to live with that.

Sincerely,

Rachel

*In this paragraph, Rachel is talking about how A Baby’s Breath and the counselors there helped her, rallied around her, coached her and helped her never feel alone.

If you are considering abortion, please read Rachel’s letter knowing she has been in a similar situation.

If you are someone who actively works in the pro-life movement – know that your work matters and that you are doing more good than you realize.  I know Rachel really appreciates the help that she continues to receive.  Let her voice assure you, you are appreciated!

I would like to thank Rachel for truly being an open book!  These pictures are Rachel – she texted them to me!  She agreed to answer all my questions and dictate the above letter.  I am truly thankful to her for allowing her name, her picture and her story to be published in the hopes that someone who feels the way she felt will know – there is help, there is support and making that phone call to A Baby’s Breath is worth it.

Oh my….. So many emotions. I can’t even begin to imagine what a roller coaster you, Matt, and of course, Rachel went through during this time. You were all certainly placed strategically by God to be in each other’s lives – I’m sorry it was not the way you imagined in the beginning. You have incredible courage and strength to have reached out to Rachel and her baby again and be in their lives in whatever way you are able to fit. That is extremely special; what a gift you are to them!!!!! Love and prayers always for your hearts desire – XOXO

YOU ARE AMAZING! I Loved this post! Thank you so much for sharing it! I gave my daughter up for adoption, and often wonder what it was like for the adoptive mother in the time between, when we discussed it and when it was finalized. I could tell she loved me and my unborn baby, but also didn’t want to get her heart broken.

And, for any one pregnant wondering about adoption. Please feel free to read this post I wrote about my adoption experience awhile back http://www.raisingdv.com/the-other-side-of-adoption-my-story-as-a-birthmother/ I hope you can find some encouragement!

Such a beautiful story – of life, of support, of love. This is a great reminder that supporting life goes beyond supporting the “birth,” but also extends post-birth! Beautiful write-up, and so heartwarming that you were able to be a source of support for this young mama!

Cheers to Friday! 🍷 I was SO EXCITED when a while Cheers to Friday! 🍷
I was SO EXCITED when a while back THE @stephanieweinert Stephanie Weinert tagged me in her #7quicktakes #sevenquicktakes #fridayintroductions post.

I’m jumping in today!

1. I recently took my own “headshots”. The first photo is one of MANY photos I took. It was super windy that day. If you need professional photos… give it a try - you can save a ton of $ this way! I used a tripod and my phone!

2. I see a lot of people posting photos of 2016. In 2016 I heard Gianna Emanuela (daughter of Saint Gianna) give a talk. I remember thinking, “her Dad sounds like a saint too!” I got to meet her. My husband and oldest son met her and asked her to pray that we could adopt again. 40 weeks later our twins were born!

3. Gianna Emmanuela is doing all she can to help the world see how holy her Father was. She has made prayer cards with Ecclesiastic approval. I’m asking Pietro Molla to intercede for a special intention. I will post more about this soon! He is such an inspiring man!

4. I have two guilty pleasures. I love getting my hair done and every once in a while I get a box from Stitch Fix. My coat was in one of those boxes.

5. I can’t remember all the pictures I chose for this post. I’m super forgetful. It’s not my age, I’ve always been this way. Saint Anthony is busy with just me most of the time.

6. We are taking our Christmas tree down this weekend. I loved our tree so much this year. My husband, all 3 children and me picked it out. We all agreed upon it and it really is so perfect.

7. I’m not so great at tech. I don’t know how to go back and see which pictures I posted without deleting this whole post. I promised after this post I would play a @saints.alive.pod episode for my daughter. I’m off to listen to another episode for at least the 3rd time. Hoping a new one comes out soon 😉

Thank you for reading all that! I’m so grateful you’re here! Tell me something about you!!!

Why is it that girls can be SO MEAN!??? When I was Why is it that girls can be SO MEAN!???
When I was a “tween” I longed to fit in with the other girls that shared my interests… but, I was not welcomed.

It hurt. It hurt a lot.

I wondered why… why did they not want to be my friend?
Why wasn’t I considered “cool”?

I asked my mom… and her advice to me was, “Just Be Yourself “.

I know she wanted to help me… but I wish she not only said that, but handed me this book too.

That is why I wrote it.

God DOES have plans and talents unique to every person… but when we are young we are still discovering His call for us.

My Catholic faith saved me.

The wisdom of Our Lord and the Saints that surrendered their lives to Him are so helpful.

And the best part… learning this can be enjoyable!!!
If you know a young girl around the ages of 10 to 13 who is struggling… give them this book!

Buy it from me this week and I’ll mail it with a sticker and a holy card!

I highly recommend you add fun pens, markers, washi tape and other things found in a journal kit!
She’ll love it… and you will too!

When I was a little girl, I vaguely remember a sil When I was a little girl, I vaguely remember a silver and blue medal fastened to my school uniform with a pin. My mom put that medal on my uniform. I don’t remember asking any questions, but I still think that blue was so pretty.
Fast forward about 9 years, and another memory surfaces… my Dad took our family to a church in a neighborhood we had to drive to. I remember parking across the street and entering the front doors of the @miraculousmedal Shrine. I recall the pads of paper placed on the marble in front of the different statues. These little memo 📝 pads were notes to God, asking Our Lady to intercede for us. I loved that I could write an intention but that one of the suggestions was “for a Catholic boyfriend” I was 15, I checked that box.
But honestly, I wasn’t a “Mary” person when it came to prayer.
Any personal prayer addressed Jesus or God.
10 years later my friend’s Mom gave me a Miraculous Medal keychain. I put it on my keys and life went on…

And over a decade later… it was that shrine I went to with this big idea about a Catholic gift guide and a giveaway.

But confession, many times in between those years each and every time I was going through something hard,I visited that place.
I poured my hearts desires on those little memo papers.
I asked Our Blessed Mother to pray for me.
I begged God to answer my prayers.

And He did.

Without me knowing the details of the Miraculous Medal.
But that time I went in there with the gift guide and giveaway idea… I was asked if I was only going to write one blog post.

That question inspired a second.
I researched the Miraculous Medal and read that Our Lady promised graces, especially to those who wore it around their neck.

More graces? Yes please

I wrote a post…” 5 Reasons Why I wear a Miraculous Medal and maybe You Should Too”.
Church Pop @churchpop asked if they could publish it.
It went viral… at least viral for me.

And a few weeks ago, I brought about 30 women there for a retreat.

I didn’t pursue Mary, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal… I pursued her Son.
My pursuit was sloppy.
Like any mother, she couldn’t resist helping me a little.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you
No one is EVER beyond God’s abundant love, generos No one is EVER beyond God’s abundant love, generosity and power.
