Good Friday: A Runner’s Perspective

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.Because by your holy cross You have redeemed the world..png

Jesus was fully human.

In prayer, I always go to Jesus as my Lord, my Good Shepherd, and my Savior.  It is not often that I contemplate on His humanity.

But a few weeks ago, when the Gospel recounted Jesus’ weeping at Lazarus’ tomb, I really began to think about Jesus in His humanness.

When I heard the Gospel reading state that Jesus wept by the tomb of Lazarus  . . . I was confused.

Didn’t Jesus know He was about to raise his friend from the dead?  Why would He be weeping?

Then I tried to put myself in His place.  I thought, maybe what He must do is becoming very real to Him.  It’s not something that will happen “one day” anymore.  It is something that He will endure soon . . . and He is terrified.

The priest gave His homily and said that this Gospel is foreshadowing the Agony in the Garden.

I can’t imagine the terror.

About a week later, I thought of Jesus falling as he drug His cross to Golgotha, (the Hill of Calvary), where He would be stripped, nailed to a cross and left to die a slow death . . . I had another flashback . ..

I ran cross country for 8 years and after graduating I continued to be a long distance runner.  I coached both cross country and track.  I have seen how physical pain can effect mental will.

My entire life – until now – I thought that Jesus fell because of physical exhaustion.  While that may be partially true, I don’t think that is the whole story.

Jesus was fully man . . .

Jesus could have very well thought:

Haven’t I suffered enough?

If I refuse to get up, maybe they will just end it here.

I don’t want to do this anymore

Why am I doing this for them, do any of them truly love me?

I’m still dying for them, why do I have to be humiliated too?

I fell once at an indoor track meet.  I don’t really know if I was tripped, or fell by accident . . . but I can tell you I thought for a second, “might as well drop out”.

But I got back up.

I remember workouts where I would be running up a hill and my legs felt like they were on fire and my muscles were screaming for me to stop.

men-1245982_1280.jpg

Then there would be a mental battle:

“stop”

“no, keep going”

“walk”

“jog slower”

“drop out”

“keep going”

Although my body could physically run the race, my mind had other things to say.

As a coach, you see this battle inside your athletes.  You watch them stop, walk, put their hands up and shake their heads no.

You see some drop out of the race.

You see others keep on going.

In our humanity, we often think of quitting.  We think of reasons why we should not forgive that person over and over again.  We hear voices in our head that may be logical, but are not Christlike.

Jesus chose to keep getting up.  Jesus continued the journey to the Cross because His Father asked Him too.

Not because it made sense to Him.

Not because He knew we would be grateful.

Not because He felt like it would make us love Him more.

And certainly not because it really didn’t hurt that badly.

Jesus kept going because He loves us in a way we should strive to love every day . . . with every fiber of our being.

This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.  No greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

John 15:12-13

This is a very important lesson for me.

I’m extremely sensitive.  I am very defensive.

Those quirks are not always Christlike.

Next time I think:

I should defend myself verbally.

I need to point out what he or she did wrong.

I am right and therefore not obligated to do anything.

That person owes me an apology.

I’m no longer going to nourish that relationship.

I deserve better.

He or she should be nicer to me.

Really, the list could go on . . .

Jesus could have said all of them.  He would have been 100% right.

But He didn’t.

He chose LOVE.

Let us pray:

Dear Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

Help me to love others the way Christ loved.  Help me to remember how Jesus demonstrated love the day he was put to death.

Help me to get back up and keep going.  Help me to follow You Jesus:

The Way; The Truth and the Life.

Amen.

Amen! I love this! Especially since I haven’t gotten around to the rest of my stations of the Cross reflections yet… this was so so good. You’re right, I often forget to enter into the full humanity of Jesus when I contemplate His suffering. I think of His power, of His coming glory. I avoid thinking of how His human emotions and fears must have surfaced. This was eye opening, beautiful!

I am reading Unbroken with my son right now for school. The protagonist is an Olympic runner. At one point the other runners teamed up against him and actually broke one of his ribs in the middle of a race! They also boxed him in but he broke through and won anyway. I thought about that will to go on no matter what while reading this. We may not all run but we can still learn from that and persevere in other ways!

When I was a little girl, I vaguely remember a sil When I was a little girl, I vaguely remember a silver and blue medal fastened to my school uniform with a pin. My mom put that medal on my uniform. I don’t remember asking any questions, but I still think that blue was so pretty.
Fast forward about 9 years, and another memory surfaces… my Dad took our family to a church in a neighborhood we had to drive to. I remember parking across the street and entering the front doors of the @miraculousmedal Shrine. I recall the pads of paper placed on the marble in front of the different statues. These little memo 📝 pads were notes to God, asking Our Lady to intercede for us. I loved that I could write an intention but that one of the suggestions was “for a Catholic boyfriend” I was 15, I checked that box.
But honestly, I wasn’t a “Mary” person when it came to prayer.
Any personal prayer addressed Jesus or God.
10 years later my friend’s Mom gave me a Miraculous Medal keychain. I put it on my keys and life went on…

And over a decade later… it was that shrine I went to with this big idea about a Catholic gift guide and a giveaway.

But confession, many times in between those years each and every time I was going through something hard,I visited that place.
I poured my hearts desires on those little memo papers.
I asked Our Blessed Mother to pray for me.
I begged God to answer my prayers.

And He did.

Without me knowing the details of the Miraculous Medal.
But that time I went in there with the gift guide and giveaway idea… I was asked if I was only going to write one blog post.

That question inspired a second.
I researched the Miraculous Medal and read that Our Lady promised graces, especially to those who wore it around their neck.

More graces? Yes please

I wrote a post…” 5 Reasons Why I wear a Miraculous Medal and maybe You Should Too”.
Church Pop @churchpop asked if they could publish it.
It went viral… at least viral for me.

And a few weeks ago, I brought about 30 women there for a retreat.

I didn’t pursue Mary, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal… I pursued her Son.
My pursuit was sloppy.
Like any mother, she couldn’t resist helping me a little.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you

“I can’t go this year, but next year I hope to!” “I can’t go this year, but next year I hope to!”

I hear this every year when I’m planning the Prayer Wine Chocolate Retreat.

And every year I think…” I don’t know if I’ll be able to do this again next year.”

Each year- each day- is a gift.
Getting to plan a retreat for women that truly serves their minds, their souls and their hearts is truly a gift.
But the truth is, I never know if I’ll be given this gift again.

Jesus reminds us all in the Gospels that we all really don’t know what will happen in the future.
I don’t know what next year will bring…

But I do know that when women attend a Prayer Wine Chocolate Retreat for a day, they say things like

“I needed this”
“I would have paid you more”
“It’s like Christmas for Moms”

I understand life is busy. I feel strongly that the busyness is a distraction from the stillness Our Lord is calling us to.

If you really can’t attend this year’s Prayer Wine Chocolate Retreat, may I make a suggestion?

Get out your calendar and schedule a day to go to confession,
A day to go to Mass that is not Sunday,
A day to get together with someone else to pray the Rosary out loud and a day to spend time with another woman that needs your prayers.

All of these things are available on November 15th.
There’s still time to register!

If you want to join us this year, comment “Register “ and I’ll send you the details.

If you definitely can’t make it, drop a prayer intention in the comments- or message me- and we will bring your intentions with us!
