Mocha, Mercy and Mondays: Forgiving all injuries

They killed her entire family . . . with machetes.  And she forgave them.  Yet, I have a difficult time forgiving someone because they “hurt my feelings” on more than one occasion.  And it’s not just me.  I hear it all the time.  “I know I should forgive, BUT THIS IS DIFFERENT.”

And we truly believe we have a right to hold a grudge.  That this certain circumstance, whatever it may be, is different. windowlook.jpeg

If you have never heard of Immaculee Ilibagiza, I need to tell you about her.  Immaculee hid in a bathroom with seven other girls for three months during the Rwandan genocide. Unlike almost one million Rwandans, she survived the genocide that took place in the early 1990’s. When she finally left the cramped, terrifying bathroom and was able to stop hiding, she did what anyone would have done.  She searched for her family.

I can’t imagine for one second the heartache she experienced on that search.  To find that her family members were brutally killed.  I just can not imagine.

Immaculee forgave the killers that took her father, mother and siblings lives.  The killers that she had to hide from in a space no bigger than a coat closet – with seven other women.  For three months she listened to people being brutally murdered just on the other side of the wall that she was squished up against.

How does anyone recover from such a horrible, traumatic, tragic experience.

I think Immaculee would tell you – by faith and forgiveness.forgivecross

As soon as I read the Spiritual Work of Mercy: Forgive All Injuries, I immediately thought of Immaculee.  A modern woman and the perfect example of how it is possible to forgive the most hateful, evil acts any human could perform.

It is known to us as Christians that we are called to forgive.

We know Jesus prayed, as He hung on the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

We can find the direction to forgive in many books of the Bible. From the Gospels to the Epistles, forgiving is stressed as extremely important.

Matthew 18:21-22

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?”

Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”

And again . . .

Colossians 3:13-14

Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

It can be so hard though!  Ask me to feed the hungry – done.  Easy peesy.  Ask me to forgive someone who hurt me – ugh.  Not so easy.  And then to add “put on love” after the forgiveness.  Not a simple task – not for me anyway!crossangel2.jpg

As I arrived at this point in my writing, I googled “tips to forgive others”.  The first article that came up on that search was written by the late Dr. Wayne Dyer.  Wayne Dyer was the man that convinced Immaculee to tell her story by writing a book – and the man who published her book.

There are no coincidences!

Here is a link to that article: Dr. Wayne Dyer’s advice on forgiving someone

The truth about forgiveness is that it is not just a gift for the receiver.  Forgiveness allows us to be free from resentment and more open to love and compassion.

I know Immaculee credits her ability to forgive the people who took her family’s lives to prayer, particularly the Rosary.  For those situations where we find it more difficult to forgive, we absolutely must turn to God in prayer.  I can’t help but think of the Prayer of St. Francis.  This is such a beautiful prayer.  The words remind us how we should act and think in all circumstances.  Let us pray:rainbowprayer.jpg

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

I strongly recommend purchasing and reading Immaculee’s account of her experience during the genocide and her journey afterwards.  The following are affiliate links to her books:

    It is the hardest thing to do, there are three that did injury in my life and I do try to forgive them and then something will come to mind and the past will replay and it is there all over again. Although when it starts to play I mentally say – STOP and throw the image out and then send the person love and God Bless. One of the persons is a relation and refuses to speak to my husband and I ever again (so they say) and we have no idea what we have done so that makes it hard to let go as one thinks if you can only talk to them you can settle it – but sometimes you have to not have that conversation in your head day in and day out but stop ourselves and place it firmly in God’s hands. Thank you for the links and reminders – they do help a lot.

      I totally hear you! It can be so hard, especially when hurt feelings resurface! Sending that person love and a God Bless is a great idea!

    I was first introduced to Immaculee through her book, “Our Lady of Kibeho.” In it, she introduces the Vatican approved apparitions that occurred in Rwanda. And, she also introduces her readers to Our Lady of Sorrows. Beautiful faith-based book, that focuses more on the apparitions and the message, than her personal story.

    That said, she is an amazingly beautiful (inside and out) woman! A true role model and inspiration!

    I love that prayer but St. Francis! I agree with you that as Christians forgiveness and then loving after forgiveness is one of the most difficult tasks we face. Great post!!!

Infertility is a part of my life story… But so is Infertility is a part of my life story…
But so is hope, prayer and miracles.

One thing I know helped me through those dark, hard years were reading miracle accounts of others who had faced this same struggle.

I loved reading miracle stories about women and couples longing for a child or children.
The accounts that shared grief, despair and uncertainty but ended with a dream come true… oh how I rejoiced with them!

Reading these true stories gave me hope… if it could happen for others… why not us.

It felt like an eternity… but it wasn’t.

God gave us our miracle… then He did it again (and again).

It really is true… ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE WITH GOD!

Don’t give up.
One day, someone will want to hear your miracle story too…

I try to bring God’s light online as much as I can I try to bring God’s light online as much as I can… but THANK GOD others are also trying to do this too!
Here are a few people that have helped me see God more in this busy world lately:

1. Kristin Reilly over at @manyhailmarysatatime . I try to pray the Rosary with them in the morning and Kristin offers meditations and little prayers and this one “Thank you God for this beautiful life!” resonated with me SO MUCH! The reason why is because of what she said after the prayer… she said “if I turn this camera around you would wonder what are you talking about!?” In other words… there’s a mess… but life is still beautiful and it’s all a gift. I started looking at my family and saying, “Thank God for this beautiful life”! And oh the JOY!!!!! Thank you Kristin and Jill!!!

2. @siobhanfallonhogan has a podcast with @ewtnmedia called Catholics and Cappuccinos @catholicapps … the conversation with @patriciaheaton has more than one quote I’d like to share. Watch it and be assured… sometimes God says yes to BOTH!

3. @fatherdanreehil … if you are reading this THANK YOU! Wow, if you know someone who left the faith after the whole priest scandal… watch an interview with this priest. I highly suggest the one with @conorgallaghershow because I shared this clip with thousands of people… I’m not exaggerating… trust me, watch it. You’ll probably go down a rabbit hole like I did and honestly, it’ll refresh your soul.

4. The @catholicsonline community has so many inspiring, prayerful, persevering Catholics saying yes to God daily. Thank you @kyliemhein for turning my attention to Exodus 14:14 last week and @catholicwalkthewayeveryday for helping us increase our prayers for our priests.

Your turn… where have you found God online lately?

Ps. Did you come across any I mentioned?!

Holy Week with young children - bedtime Masses and Holy Week with young children - bedtime Masses and services are definitely not ideal… at least there weren’t for our family.

I once read or heard another mom suggest washing your children’s feet on Holy Thursday… she I tried it and my kids absolutely LOVED it!

In fact, they would ask to wash my feet!

Last year I took my 3 children (8 year old twins and 12 year old) to a Shrine as a sort of modified 7 churches visit.
It was like a holy adventure!

I had planned on taking them to 2 more churches but we stayed at the first place for awhile so we kept it to that one visit.

Holy Week offers many opportunities and invites much silence and contemplation, but young children make what is do-able different.

We want our children to see and understand God’s great love for us. I feel like these activities communicate that- at least partially.

Do you have suggestions for Good Friday or Holy Saturday?

If this was helpful, please share!

Did you notice the part of the Gospel yesterday th Did you notice the part of the Gospel yesterday that stated what happened once Jesus died on the cross? There was a certain part that caught my attention more this year than in years past.
Here is an excerpt:
“… the veil of the sanctuary
was torn in two from top to bottom.
The earth quaked, rocks were split, tombs were opened,
and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection,
they entered the holy city and appeared to many...@

That part about Saints rising and appearing to many made me wonder… did Saint Joseph appear to Mary? Did Saint Anne appear to her daughter as she mourned the loss of her Son?”

These were thoughts and questions I never had before.

After the Masses were over yesterday my nephew was baptized! My sister Theresa is his mother.
My sister Theresa was named after The Little Flower 🌹
I know a statue is not a person… but it looks like God and Saint Therese’ sent a wink from heaven yesterday… look who made sure she had a front row seat to the Baptism!

It’s interesting to see how the Saints have always been a part of the story.

I find such comfort that not only can I ask YOU to pray for me, but I can also reach out to the Saints and ask them to pray for me too.

By the way, if you ever need a parking spot, ask Saint Polycarp… he got us a great one yesterday in downtown Philly!
Someone once told me to ask him for help when looking for a parking spot. Her reasoning was “no one is asking him for anything” 😂 I’m telling you… it works every time I ask!

We are not alone.
If you need prayers- ASK
Ask your friends, family and call on the Saints!

What Saint has prayed for you before? I’d love to hear about it!
