Rosary Ring Chews

RosaryRingChews are a sized up silicone version of a rosary ring. They are perfect for little hands to hold and a great way to introduce our little ones to an important part of our Catholic Faith while being soft and soothing to teething gums. I’m so excited to give this to my niece!  I picked her mom’s favorite color <3

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Plush

The very first Shining Light Dolls Plush dolls have arrived and they are even cuter than we imagined!

Handcrafted from the softest plush we could find, and standing at roughly 10 inches tall these plush dolls are sure to become your little one’s favorite companions!

Gorgeous embroidery details on Jesus’ chest and face make this plush even more of a treasure.

The Sacred Heart Jesus is dressed in classic red and white with the Sacred Heart embroidered on his chest.

I just had to pry the doll out of my 7 year old’s hands!  He keeps saying how cute it is!!

All dolls come tagged with feast day and patronage information, ready for gifting (if you can manage to let them go!) Plush material is surface washable. Safe + non-toxic: US + Canadian safety standard certified.

USE CODE CATHOLICSONLINE for 10% off! (you have got to see the Mary one too – soooo cute!!!)

Saint Francis Swaddle Blanket

Saint Francis and his animal friends make the perfect design for babies and children.

This Muslin Swaddle Blanket was hand drawn and includes: Saint Francis, Ducks, Bears, Skunks, Birds, Foxes, the Sun, Moon and Stars, Deer, Fish, Bunnies and Pears.

The dear woodland scene will surround your little ones in the intercession of St. Francis and sweet images that will grow with them as they trail their blankie behind them for years to come.

Gifts for Children and tweens:

The Star: A Tale About Faith and Friendship

This movie became an instant family favorite when we saw it!  I LOVE it!  Tells the story of Joseph and Mary and the birth of Jesus through the eyes of the donkey who traveled to Bethlehem with them.  It’s adorable and the DVD is only $4.00!

A Faith Based Book

For the children of parents who frequently pray the Rosary or the Divine Mercy Chaplet, these two books for little ones are a great way to talk about the example mom and dad are setting.

Divine Mercy for Little Ones

introduces children to the beautiful devotion of Divine Mercy. Children learn the meaning of God’s mercy, as well as the different aspects of the devotion, such as the symbolism behind the image, the hour of mercy, and Divine Mercy Sunday. Divine Mercy for Little Ones

Consecration to Mary for Little Ones

Consecration to Mary for Little Ones follows the traditional 33-day preparation of Marian Consecration, at a child’s level. Children learn about Mary’s life, how to pray with her, and why having a relationship with her will bring them closer to her son, Jesus. Each day also includes a special quote from a saint or Marian apparition. Let us bring the little ones to Jesus through the “quickest, easiest, and fastest way,”the Consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Single Decade Rosary for School Bag or Purse

Best suited inside a purse or backpack for quick access for prayer, this is stylish, fun and totally practical. Made by Small Things Great Love, you can get a rainbow style or blue and white in honor of Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Personally, I can’t wait to give it to the 8th grader who asked me to be her Confirmation Sponsor this Christmas!

A Marian Scrunchie

Yes, these things exist – much to every tween girl parent’s delight!

Now your favorite Marian pattern is a scrunchie! Wear it on your wrist or wear it in your hair.

Journals/Books

Recommended for Girls: Be Yourself: A Journal for Catholic Girls

Journal for tweens and teens

Fabric Bracelets

Many secular gift guides this year have Pura Vida bracelets listed.  Mary with You makes similar bracelets, but adds Catholic scapulars and meaning to their products!

This friendship style bracelet set is called “Gate of Heaven”.  So pretty!

Nail Polish

If you’ve read the name of some nail polishes . . . you might know that some are not exactly G rated.  This motivated a concerned Mom to start her own business.

“The idea for Lisieux came after finding the best pink nail polish only to find out it had the most inappropriate name ever and we had to hand it back to the sales associate at the cosmetics counter. ”

Lisieux Nail Polish has beautiful colors and the names celebrate our faith.  Some colors you fill find are Cherub, Avila, Paschal and Water into Wine.

Socks!

No one in my house can ever find a pair of matching socks.  Everyone in this house are getting socks from Sock Religious this year!

Wooden Medal Bracelets, Necklaces and more!

Kindred Forest Co. is an artisan wooden Saint medal company. We are creating a new narrative about Saints – one that brings them into our everyday lives in the most pure kind of friendship: friendship that desires the best good – God – for everyone involved.

Gifts for men:

Our most favorite gift for Catholic men – young and old – in our household are the

WWI Battlebead Rosaries.

*Perfect for the history buff!

Historical 1916 WWI Service Combat Rosary design.
This compact all metal rosary is rugged, functional and portable.  It has a meaningful history, as it is a replica of the service combat rosaries issued by the government to soldiers, sailors, and flying aces during WWI.
It comes in a small round tin for portability and storage.

Saint Anthony Key Chain

Make him laugh while giving him something practical!

I love how the Saint Anthony Key Chain has the prayer “Saint Anthony, Saint Anthony please come around and when this gets lost, make sure it gets found”!

If he doesn’t tend to lose things, this Saint Benedict Medal keychain is attractive, masculine and plus tradition has it that it gives God’s protection against spiritual and physical danger. Now that’s a gift that keeps on giving!

Door Number 9 is “all things Catholic Geek” and I mean that in a great way.  My husband and I belong to a Catholic Geek group on Facebook and it is so fun.  And, what is even more awesome . . . there are over 10,000 members.

So, this shop is awesome to peruse if you consider yourself a Catholic Geek.  I highly recommend the St. Nick mug with his icon and the text that states, “I came to give presents to kids and punch heretics,” Saint Nicholas says, “And I just ran out of presents.”

Chocolate/Candy –

Trappistine Quality Candy is made by the nuns at Mt St Mary’s Abbey with great joy, prayer and love. This business allows the Sisters to support their life and further charity.

I also must add their dark chocolate hearts go great with red wine . . . so maybe add this to some beautiful women’s stockings too 🙂

Holy Socks

Socks are a popular stocking stuffer.  Up the game with some socks from Sock Religious!  St. Nick Socks will bring the Christmas sweater party to the next level.  Quite a few of the options are great dress/work socks.  And let’s be honest, one day the receiver is going to be happy you gave them because they may be the only clean socks in the drawer. (Add them to the teens stockings too).

Books

Recommended by my husband, Matt: Hungry Souls: Supernatural Visits, Messages and Warnings from Purgatory

This book isn’t something you might find on normal gift guides – but, it, according to my husband, was a fascinating read and encouraged him to continue and increase how much we pray for souls.

Beard Balm

“The beard signifies the courageous; the beard distinguishes the grown men, the earnest, the active, the vigorous. So that when we describe such, we say, he is a bearded man.”
– St. Augustine

For the Beautiful Women:

So let’s talk about giving gifts to women who are both Catholic and Christian.  I strongly recommend a Miraculous Medal necklace to all of your loved ones.  I personally love a Rosary bracelet.  However, some may identify more as a Christian – others may LOVE simple jewelry.  For both of those women on your list, I suggest:

A Mustard Seed Necklace or Bracelet

Relics by Rose makes both!

Wear this necklace ( or bracelet) as a reminder to inspire your faith in the Lord!
“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field; which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches.”- Matthew 13:31–32

“For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”- Matthew 18:20

Lettered Lace Earrings by Pink Salt Riot

The Lettered Lace collection features a variety of words hand lettered from top to bottom and mirrored to create unique geometrics with a hidden meaning. More exquisite Jewelry from Telos Art

Or as I like to call Telos, “Catholic Anthropologie”

Art & jewelry by Phoenix-based mama inspired by truth, beauty, & goodness. Modern design for a timeless faith.

Holy Socks

One of the memories I have of my mom as a kid was that she always wore socks with holes in them.  Not a fashion statement, just evidence that moms often neglect themselves while they are busy caring and giving to their families.  Give that mom in your life a new pair of socks.  I love the ones that have inspirational messages written on the bottom!

In full disclosure, I received products in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  I love Christmas shopping and giving gifts that people truly love.

And, if I’m being honest, I like getting gifts too!

This year, let’s give presents that uplift the spirit and encourage faith in Our Lord.

We all know Christmas is Jesus’ birthday.  I love finding ideas that can incorporate His love for us into our modern lives.

There are so many businesses and artists out there that make gifts encouraging prayer, love of neighbor and hope!

Here are a few I am LOVING this year!

For teens and young adults:

  1. The Holy Spirit Chaplet Bracelet by Rakstar Designs*

This is so pretty and a nice change up from the Rosary bracelet (which I also love)!  Rakstar Designs is a shop with a whole variety of items.  The jewelry is beautiful.

I’m also loving their new mug that states “Morning Has Broken: Coffee will fix it”!  These products honor Our Lord and look cool doing so.

2. Temporary Tattoos from Just Love Prints.

My absolute favorite is the “Be Not Afraid” one written in St. John Paul II’s handwriting. Lindsey, the shop owner, also makes car magnets, stickers, phone cases and more.  You have got to check out her shop!

3. Add to the theme of being fearless, give this mini-tablet pouch gift set from DaySpring

Natural Life products are trendy and positive. This is my sister Veronica. She’s wearing a Natural Life Head Band and holding a Natural Life bag.

4. A “Happy Bag” from Natural Life

This company encourages being grateful, choosing joy and spreading hope and happiness!  Today we are well aware that anxiety and despair are often experienced by young people.  These kinds of gifts are one way to remind the receiver that they are loved after the holiday is over.

5. A Prayer Box

I love this  Warrior Not a Worrier Prayer box. Fits perfectly in a stocking and a trendy, stylish reminder to pray and give our worries to God!

6. Purple Sacred Heart Boho Bracelet

This unique and beautiful triple wrap bracelet features a button clasp with the Sacred Heart set into textured jeweler’s clay and sealed with resin. A mixture of purple Jasper gemstone beads and pale lavender glass beads are individually and securely hand knotted. The bracelet is designed to wrap three times around the wrist and is secured by looping the button through the knotted leather loop. The total length is 22″ and it can also be worn as a necklace. Perfect for a woman who wants to wear and share her faith in a beautiful way!

7. Fun Socks!

For those that still leave your shoes out the night before December 6th, St. Nick Socks are perfect!  For Christmas morning, St. Michael and St. Therese’ socks are perfect stocking stuffers and add on gifts 🙂 . Let’s be honest, who can’t use a new pair of socks?

For the guys:

8. A Stainless Steel St. Benedict (or Miraculous Medal) Money Clip by Relics by Rose

Stainless Steel Money Clip for men with a choice of Miraculous Medal or St. Benedict Cross medal. Each piece shows one side of the medal, set into blue or black jeweler’s clay and sealed with resin.

Put some money in it and that gift is a sure winner!

9. Chesterton Coaster Set

These handsome coasters feature a woodgrain pattern, simple imagery, and an awesome quote from GK Chesterton:

“In Catholicism, the pint, the pipe, and the Cross can all fit together.”
Hot gin toddies. Smoking rosemary old fashioneds. A “wet” Advent calendar. Now you can experience Christmas the way it was meant to be celebrated: with festive cocktails and a lively history of Saint Nicholas and other saints! Michael Foley, author of Drinking with the Saints, presents holiday drink recipes; beer, wine, and cider recommendations; and witty instruction on how to honor the saints in this exquisite gift book that will make your Christmas more spirited than ever before.
Confession:  I love this book, so it’s not just for guys!

Each box contains snacks and treats from five religious orders from all over the country. There is a large or small box to choose from.  Who doesn’t like a snack that taste heavenly???

Confession: I get caught up in the Christmas shopping, the music, the lights . . . and I often don’t think much about Advent.

I often think about my faith, but as far as “liturgical seasons”; I’m not , how should I say this, on the ball?

One thing I do think about in the busyness of the season is keeping Christ in Christmas and remembering He is the REASON FOR THE SEASON.

I like to remind others . . . but I don’t want to beat anyone over the head with it so to speak.

Which is why I came up with the idea of giving “Spiritual Stocking Stuffers”.  A little gift among the practical that reminds the receiver that Our Lord loves them tremendously and longs to spend time with them in prayer and sacraments.

I also believe these gifts show the person receiving how much we truly love them.  I believe this gifts will provide a physical sign of hope once the hustle and bustle of the season is long over, and life with it’s normal ups and downs, is back again.

I look for gifts I would want to both give and receive.  This year, here are my suggestions for

Spiritual Stocking Stuffers

Pink Salt Riot’s Saint Benedict Rosary Bracelet

StBenedictbracelet

I learned a little about the Saint Benedict Medal this year and it really intrigued me. There are a number of benefits credited to this medal – two are: To serve as an armor against temptation; 5. and to secure a timely and healthy birth for children. In addition to this medal being such a powerful sacramental, Pink Salt Riot displays it in a modern, fashionable and fun way! I’m looking forward to wearing mine 🙂

A T-Shirt from PioPrints

I simply LOVE these tees!  I have the set the world on fire, but I am hoping to also get the “Start being brave . . .” and the MOVE ON tee (where was that years ago when I so couldn’t move one!!??)!  I love that these fit women and children.  I love how soft they are and they are totally in style! I love how they empower women – young and old!

WWI Battle Beads with the Passion Crown of Thorns Crucifix

“When people love and recite the rosary they find it makes them better.”

Saint Anthony Mary Claret

The Rosary has been prayed and praised by many saints – and many of them, men!  The Rosary is such a powerful prayer, and this one from Cordbands.com couldn’t be more masculine!  I, personally, think it is so cool! As explained by the company:

This compact all metal rosary is rugged, functional, and portable.  It has a meaningful history, as it is a reproduction of the service rosaries issued by the government to soldiers, sailors, and flying aces during WWI, hence the name.

This Rosary is perfect for all the guys on your list!

Shining Light Dolls and Books

Totally adorable and absolutely perfect for my little ones hands!  They hold them, admire them and they put them in their mouths.  All okay with me!  It’s a great reminder for me as a mom to tell them about St. Michael the Archangel or Our Lady of Guadalupe or whomever they are holding and playing with at that moment.  It also reminds me to teach them a prayer and to pray over them and for them!

Shining Light Dolls also has two awesome board books for the little loved ones in your life!  We have and love The Virgin Mary Around the World and I’m thinking of purchasing Saints on the Go for a St. Nicholas Day present.  I also love these books for Godchild Christmas presents!

A Frameable Faith Catholic Print (or Subscription)

Frameable Faith provides beautiful art to display and is incredibly inspirational!  Offering both digital downloads and monthly subscriptions options, it’s a great add on to a gift or stocking!

Natural Life Gifts

From their Blessings Shop to their FEARLESS collection, this company taps into our faith in a way that is modern and trendy without sacrificing the need for God in our lives.  Although most gifts are for the young woman you are shopping for, I’m so excited to see they have included a cool men’s t-shirt!  The Feel the Fear Tee is a part of the FEARLESS line; which aims to help educate and empower those who suffer from anxiety.

Trappistine Quality Candy (made by the Sisters of Mt. Saint Mary’s Abbey)

Lots of choices to choose from (some chocolate, some not) – ALL DELICIOUS!  Seriously, it must be the added prayer because this candy truly tastes heavenly!  Not only are you gifting a sweet treat when you purchase this product, but you are helping the Sisters who make the candy sustain themselves and allowing them to continue a life of prayer,  which includes prayer for you and all the peoples of our world!  Great for a man or woman, young or old – this gift truly is the best stocking stuffer! Shop their catalog and order online (and by the way, the dark chocolate goes great with red wine 😉 )!

SaongJai Catholic Shop

Perfect for the little girl who loves her pearls and jewelry.  I love how Aleesa hand makes fun Miraculous Medal necklaces – and even some matching necklaces for dolls!  Very kid friendly and fun, SaongJai has jewelry and rosaries for the little girl on your list. SaongJai also has medals young boys can wear – while staying stylish of course!  Whether your shopping for a boy or a girl, SaongJai has the perfect Spiritual Stocking Stuffer!

A Miraculous Medal Necklace

There are so many to choose from – for men and women, teens and grandparents!  I love the handmade ones at Relics by Rose and I also love the simplicity of a small, simple gold Miraculous Medal. Our Blessed Mother promised many graces to those who wore one around their necks – its a spiritual and fashionable win!

A Necklace made by Relics by Rose

Rose enjoys rescuing lost, broken, or forgotten Catholic religious medals, prayer cards and rosaries, and using them in modern jewelry designs while maintaining their Catholic identity and value.  Her items are gorgeous.  Her most recent addition to her collection is a Rosary necklace that is also a wrap bracelet!  I love that I can use this to pray the Rosary, wear as a necklace OR as a stunning bracelet! Rose sells a variety of necklaces, bracelets and earrings – all incredibly unique and beautiful!

This time of year we tend to look at our financial situation and attempt to balance between what we should buy and what we would really love to purchase.

ChristmasMall.jpg

We live in a culture that is so abundant in material possessions  that it’s not unusual to hear a radio advertisement asking the listener, “what do you get for the person who has everything?”. This is a phrase that convinces a customer to buy and helps a business survive – and possibly thrive.

But the reality is, many of us are using credit to do our shopping and our bills do not leave us with much for savings.

Personally, I LOVE Christmas shopping.  I love buying people Christmas gifts.  Somehow, even as a poor college student, I always managed to buy presents for family and close friends.  It is something that has brought me joy as long as I can remember.

This year, the budget is super tight.  This week in particular reminded me of that.  My husband’s car was inspected and needed almost $1,000 of work (and that was just to pass inspection); our oven broke and our heat up stairs stopped working.  What a week – for any time of year.  But it’s Christmas time, so it’s an extra reminder to me that our finances are limited.

However, that doesn’t change how much I really like to Christmas shop.  One thing I look forward to each year is purchasing a gift for our parish giving tree so that a needy child will have one more thing to open Christmas morning.  I reached out to the woman who runs the toy drive and asked “what age group needs gifts?”

I knew the answer before she responded.  Those tween years are tough.  Sure enough, I was informed – both boys and girls ages 10-13.

I have a special place in my heart for the average 13 year old girl.  I remember vividly how challenging that time was – and I often choose that age when I shop for a gift to donate.

But . . . how can I justify buying another thing?

credit-card-851502_1280

Then a phrase that has been a voice inside my mind once before returned:

God will provide.

And He did.  I found coupon for Staples (an office supply/stationary store) for $10.00 off a purchase of $10.00 or more.  So basically . . . $10.00 appeared.

$10.00 is not going to get the most amazing gift . .. but it enabled me to get some colored pens and two adorable notebooks.  Hopefully that humble gift will bring a young girl a smile and some joy.

Although ten dollars is a small gift from above, I have seen God provide in much bigger ways.

The fact that I went to college, lived there and graduated in four years is a huge testament to the value financial aid, hard work at humbling part-time jobs and divine intervention.

But that phrase:
“God will provide” was particularly loud and persistent about four years ago . . . when, after years of praying, my husband and I finally became parents.

As a teacher in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Secondary Schools, I knew that once we became parents, I would stay home for a year.  That was a benefit I saw many other teachers I worked with enjoy, I had planned to do the same.

That year went by so quickly . . . and my husband really felt that I needed to go back to work so that we could stay afloat financially.

But, all I kept hearing inside my own head was . . . “God will provide”.

birdwintercardinalGodprovides.jpg

Our son was born with some health challenges, and my life as a teacher had me working on lesson plans and grading almost every waking hour that I wasn’t instructing students in the classroom.  I had tried to change that “system” many times; but then I would be teaching content I wasn’t familiar with or something else would be thrown in the mix.

I couldn’t be both a good mom and a good teacher.  I knew this in my heart.

I assured my husband, “God will provide”.

And He did.  From secondary insurance, to part-time work as an SAT reader, to more babysitting jobs I had in high school, God provided.  And He didn’t stop there.  My husband has earned two promotions since we have become parents.

We certainly do not live extravagantly, and there is a list of things that need attention, but we are okay.  Our heat is on, and we are not hungry.

God provides us with what we need.  He loves us.  Sometimes I need the reminder that what those who I love most don’t need an extra gift, but extra love, extra listening, extra attention, extra prayers and extra forgiveness.

If you are worried about balancing your checkbook, remember, God will provide.

Sometimes, He just wants to remind us to close our checkbooks and open our hearts.

May the Lord give you a very, very, Merry Christmas!

Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock.  The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.  The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.  And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.”  And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:

“Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Luke 2: 8-14

Confession: This Advent; I have said the names “Santa” and “Saint Nicholas” more than I have said the name “Jesus”.  I know, not a good thing.  However, I know my weaknesses and since I am determined to teach my child how much Jesus loves him, I reached out to DaySpring and asked if I could review The Shepherd on the Search Advent Activity Set.  Thankfully, DaySpring agreed to send me the kit and allow me to host a giveaway!  I can honestly say, I am so glad we are actively participating in this activity in our home!  After reading our son the book and completing some of the fun games and crafts that accompany it with our son, I can share why I LOVE this gift set and would recommend it to everyone who celebrates Christmas!

Five Reasons Why I LOVE DaySpring’s The Shepherd on the Search

shepherdwatchingflock.jpeg

1. The Shepherd can be used with or without the Elf!

If you already use the famous Elf on the Shelf; you can easily add the Shepherd to the mix.  In fact, you could probably have a ton of fun teaming them up to do some entertaining things and allow your children to find them both together some mornings.  However, if you are not an elf fan – you can use The Shepherd instead!  We don’t have an Elf.  Our view is – Santa sees you no matter what – all the time.  I will say, sometimes I wished we had one.  The Shepherd was exactly what I was looking for . .. we can still have fun with looking for the little guy in the morning – but we are always reminded of who we should always search for . . .

ShepherdontheSearchJesus2.jpg

2. Your child or children can touch The Shepherd and it’s all good!

I’ve heard that for those who do participate in “The Elf on the Shelf” that no one is allowed to touch the Elf.  I’ve also heard, that when children inevitably touch him, that creates more work for the parents.  The Shepherd can be touched and in fact, DaySpring offers online activities that go along with The Shepherd’s search – and our son’s FAVORITE involves hiding and seeking the Shepherd. That leads me to my next reason . .

3. The Daily ADVENTures found on DaySpring’s Website

DaySpring offers lots of ideas to use The Shepherd as a teaching tool and gives me ways to simply spend quality time with my son.  Our son, Xavier, is 4 years old.  He loves to cut and use scotch tape!  So, I was thrilled when I saw the first suggested activity was to create a paper chain countdown!  We made that chain together and it was a great activity for us.  We don’t get to do each ADVENTure – but again, that’s okay! One of the suggested activities is “Find the Shepherd”.  My son is so into hide and seek right now, so I thought, “he’ll like this game”.  Well – he LOVES it and wants to play EVERY DAY! I’m sure there is an ADVENTure your child will love as well!

shepherdonthesearchblog

4. Your child gets to name the Shepherd and he gets to look for him in the morning

You can hide him – or you could lose him for three days and say he must have found a really good hiding spot (cough, cough – that might have happened here).  Sometimes he’s in a funny spot.  No matter where he is, when Xavier finds him he smiles and is so happy!  I get a kick out of where my husband puts him sometimes.  Other times, I like to be creative and silly.  It’s fun – for all of us!

5. And Finally, The Shepherd is based on Scripture and the true meaning of Christmas

When the angels went away from them to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.”  So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger.  When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child.  All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds.  And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.

Luke 2:15-20

The Shepherd on the Search book uses this Bible verse as a starting point.  The Shepherd, who comes with the book and your child names, is a child that helps the adult shepherds.  The men tell the child to stay back – but he is to excited and follows behind – but not to close, because he doesn’t want to get seen (since he was told not to come along)!

It’s a great book to add to the nightly bedtime routine.  The illustrations are fantastic.  The story is fun and clear.

In full disclosure, I am so excited to partner with Shutterfly!  As a long time customer, I am very happy to be chosen to share their amazing products with you. I was invited to make our Christmas cards with their company and provided a credit to purchase the finished product in exchange for my honest review.

What’s on your list this month?

Get the tree, go see lights, decorate (both inside and outside), shop, go see Santa, get your picture with Santa, have breakfast with Santa, go to a Craft fair, bake cookies, attend a “grand illumination”, schedule a Christmas photo shoot, watch Christmas movies, go to a party, go to an community event, go to a church event, go to a cookie exchange, go to a train display . . . the list of what people do this time of year seems to be getting longer every year!

MerryoverMadness.jpeg

Is it just me, or is December getting a little to busy?

I’m not sure about you, but “keeping up with the Joneses” is not something I normally worry myself about – but during the holidays, it seems to be a real pressure.

If it’s too much for you, I’m right there with you.

I’ve decided that this time of year is not going to stress me out.  I have ALWAYS enjoyed the weeks before Christmas.  I’m refusing to let the inevitable stress to get to me.

Here’s how I hope to embrace the merry over the madness this year:

1.  Plan very few activities.

We planned to cut down our tree.  We will have to plan to get our gifts together and our shopping done.  We will plan when we will see our families.  I’m sure we’ll plan something fun.  But that’s it!  We don’t have to do “all the things”!

2.  Do something spontaneous.

Santa2016phone.jpg

One day I was shopping with my son and he came across a toy rotary phone that “calls Santa”.  I had no intention on buying it . . . but, he was playing with it and enjoying it.  I loved how he was learning about something that was commonplace in my youth.  I bought it.  He’s played with it everyday.  I caught him under the table with it, and overheard him telling Santa some things he wants – that he will not tell me or my husband.  Not a BIG thing, but something so simple that brought unplanned joy!

3. Capture Moments but don’t try to create them

We live in an age where “pictures” are so important.  I’m so caught up in it. I’m beyond guilty of not following my own advice here.  We went shopping the other day and there was a big Christmas tree, so I insisted we get “a” picture in front of it.  Really?  Did we really need to document that moment?  No.  So, I’m working on this one.  I was really tempted to schedule a photo session – but I didn’t.  Our budget is tight, and we own a camera – so we can take our own pictures. For example, I bought the play Santa phone and since our son was enjoying it so much, I took a picture of him (okay, I took a ton of pictures of him).

4.  Choose a simple card.

I really thought about picking one picture for our card this year, but when I saw this one on Shutterfly – I thought – so perfect!  That’s my goal – to enjoy the simple moments!  And, luckily, I had caught a few simple moments where my son was truly happy!

Screen Shot 2016-12-03 at 10.51.02 PM.png

5.  Be Okay with Relaxing and letting others take the lead

I’m telling myself again to be okay with number 1.  Maybe we’ll get into the city to see light shows and all the things . . . but if we don’t – that’s fine!  Maybe we will drive around and look at the lights.  Maybe we’ll watch a Christmas movie. Maybe my husband will want to do something, and we’ll do that.  I notice our son is the happiest when we do something “as a family”.  It could going shopping together.  He’s four and I feel like knowing what brings him joy helps me totally understand why Jesus said:

“Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven”

Matthew 18:3

We can see a glimpse of the kingdom of heaven, where we will experience true joy, when we listen to a four year old talk about what makes him happy or what she wants Santa to bring.  It’s usually not a long list, and it’s usually adorable.

With or without a young child, sometimes it’s just easier to let others do the planning. I like the idea of that.

How do you embrace the “Merry” over the “Madness”?

This year, I’m going to think and reflect on Advent before I rush into Christmas.

Don’t get me wrong, I am super excited to Christmas shop, and fully embrace the season of secular madness.  I’m a big kid and I love it.

But this year, I am seeing a lot of Catholic bloggers talking about Advent – and that has been a wake up call for me.  I need to think about what Advent is, and why Christians established it as a season.

gettingreadyforchristmass

Lucky for me, I am the parent to incredible four year old, and I am eager to go on this journey with him.  If you are not a parent, or your children has grown, perhaps find a niece, nephew or grandchild to embrace this season.  Their innocence is inspiring and really brings the joy and excitement of the season to life.

And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.  When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” Mark 10:13-16

I’m going to need some help on this journey, so here are a few items I may purchase to help me.  If you purchase these, I make a small percentage – so thank you very much!

The Shepherd on the Search- Advent Activity Set

I LOVE this alternative to the “Elf on the Shelf”.  DaySpring has created this book set so that during the Advent season, families can read the story of the shepherd’s timeless journey in a beautifully illustrated interactive children’s book, and let the fun begin every day as they hide the shepherd and children find him in a new place along the search!

Fisher Price Little People Nativity Set

XavNativityLittlePeople.jpg

This toy Nativity Set was such a great investment for our family. Above is a picture of my son two years ago . . . he made the angel kiss the baby Jesus! Such a great way to talk and teach about what Christmas is and why we celebrate it.  I love that these Little People are durable enough to be played with by very young children, but still enjoyed by the older ones!  We have a beautiful “adult” Nativity Set, but the past couple years we have simply put out this one.  When members of the scene fall, nothing breaks.  That is truly an added bonus! Click here to purchase: Little People Nativity Set

The Legend of the Poinsettia

Screen Shot 2016-11-18 at 10.09.04 AM.png

We see these plants almost as much as we see Christmas trees this time of year.  What a wonderful way to talk about the season with your child by reading this book together. In Mexico, the poinsettia is called flor de la Nochebuenao  which means flower of the Holy Night. This Mexican legend tells how the poinsettia came to be, through a little girl’s unselfish gift to the Christ Child.  I have seen many moms showing excitement for a new tradition of wrapping 24 books before Christmas and reading one a night.  This would be an excellent story to include in that tradition! Click here to purchase: The Legend Of the Poinsettia Book

Advent with Saint Teresa of Calcutta: Daily Meditations

Screen Shot 2016-11-18 at 10.37.18 AM.png

Although I am going to love embracing the season with my son, I will need some time alone with the Lord . . . and my coffee.  These daily meditations are just the right size for me.  I can read it with my coffee, or take it with me to adoration (and if I can only stay for 10 or 15 minutes, this is the perfect way to guide that time in prayer).  The Scripture quotes will also inspire me to pull out my prayer journal and enjoy my prayer time and rare times of quiet reflection. Click here to purchase: Daily Meditations with Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Tis the Season Devotional Kit

illustratedfaith.16.01 AM.jpg

Reserving time to prayer journal has been quite tough for me.  I really want to do it and I know it makes my soul happy!  This devotional kit is just what I need to motivate and jumpstart my personal prayer time.  DaySpring has many illustrated faith kits,  and this one is brand new! Whether you are shopping early for Christmas, or need a gift for any occasion – the theme of prayer, wine and chocolate is usually a win, win, win!  All three of these things can bring comfort in times of sorrow and help us celebrate the joyful times!

Now, you may or may not know – I am extremely picky!  I don’t like having a lot of stuff – so the stuff I am going to recommend will be practical.  I love giving and getting presents – but I’m all about presents being useful and something that will be loved!

Here are some things I would love to receive – all revolving around the “prayer, wine and chocolate theme”.  All gifts can include an added bottle of wine 😉

I suggest giving a present that includes one gift out of each category.

Prayer

A Miraculous Medal

This Miraculous Medal is perfect for everyday wear.  I love this type of Miraculous Medal because it is small, simple, matches everything and I can wear it to bed comfortably.  This is on my Christmas list <3.Screen Shot 2016-11-13 at 9.34.52 PM.png

A Coloring Book Devotional

I love this devotional/coloring book.  I could see myself choosing a page to reflect upon and color; then cutting it out and glue into my prayer journal.

Eucharistic Adoration Reflections

I love how the reflections in this book are set up.  Short and simple – not a lot of reading so more time to reflect and meditate.

The Rosary: The Prayer that Saved My Life

Immaculee’s testimony to her faith in God is awe-inspiring.  Her story and Christian example is amazing.  In this book, Immaculee shares how the Rosary has helped her in every aspect of her life, from graciouswordsliterally saving her life to strengthening her faith, easing sorrows, changing heartache into happiness, healing illnesses in herself and others, solving family problems, landing a dream job, finding long-lost friends, and even locating lost keys!

The “Gracious Words” Rosary Bracelet

or really anything from Christian Bling.  Jewelry is a nice gift and this company focused all the pieces on Scripture and prayer. I also love the necklace “Endless”.  I enhanced that piece by adding a Miraculous Medal and wear it frequently. IF YOU MAKE A PURCHASE with Christian Bling through ctbling.com/HisGoodness, WRITE IN PARTY NUMBER 1825, AND YOU ARE AUTOMATICALLY ENTERED TO WIN FREE HOSTESS SHOPPING! WINNER WILL BE CHOSEN DECEMBER 14TH!!! Merry Christmas!!!

Wine

Wine socks!

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-9-51-34-pmI strongly suggest we all buy these before they are sold out.  I think the same women who’s moms were searching the world for Cabbage Patch Kids whatever many years ago that was – will be searching the world for these socks this year.  That is my prediction.  I hope they are not already sold out!

Wine pajamas

I need new pajamas – and they are a really popular gift around Christmas time.  Might as well have fun with it and get the wine themed ones!!!

Tasting Wine and Cheese: An Insider’s Guide to Mastering the Principles of Pairing

this book is a great add on to a basket full of wine goodies!  I love wine and cheese as well as wine and chocolate!

Pretty Decor!

This Set of 6 Warm White Wine Bottle Cork Lights are so pretty!!!

Screen Shot 2016-11-13 at 10.40.39 PM.png

Chocolate

My absolute favorite recommendation for chocolate right now comes from the Trappistine Quality Candy – chocolate made with love and prayers by the Nuns of Mount Saint Mary’s Abbey!  This gift brings prayer and chocolate together perfectly 🙂

three hearts.jpg

The dark chocolate hearts pictured above pair perfectly with red wine.  They are also a big win for anyone who likes a sweet treat, but doesn’t want to feel guilty about it afterwards.  They are the perfect size for just the right sweet craving.

The Santa Pops are the perfect add on for any Christmas gift – so cute and delicious!!!

simplechristmas1Our family truly had a Blessed Christmas! As I write this,  I am listening to our son play with his Hess truck – which by the way could be the loudest toy ever created . . . like ever.  Seriously.  Anyway, I digress . . .

Having a three year old not only makes the house louder and life more busy, it intensifies the magic that is Christmas.  That childlike faith that Jesus reminded his disciples of in the Gospel of Matthew , is so tangible at Christmas, it could practically be wrapped up in a Macy’s shirt box.  The moments that have quickly become treasured memories this holy season, have “schooled” me in some of life’s simple lessons.

  1.  Sing and Praise the Lord through Music! Our son learned to sing “Go Tell it On the Mountain” at his school and just started singing it at the kitchen table one day.  My heart leapt for joy!  I love this song (it’s catchy, plus I lip sang it in front of my high school students one year, so it brings back a happy memory).  What a great reminder of how singing a hymn is a beautiful a prayer!
  2. Always Give More. I think I saw on Pinterest and Facebook more than a dozen times a post that suggested wrapping up Christmas themed books and opening/reading one each day of December.  I did our own version of this in our house.  I went to the library and took out almost every Christmas picture book.  As I read them, one book in particular taught me a lesson.  The Baker’s Dozen: A Saint Nicholas Tale was an attempt by me to learn and teach my son about St. Nicholas before Dec. 6th.  This was the first year we did the “leave your shoes out for St. Nick” tradition, and honestly, I knew nothing about it.  This book wasn’t as much about St. Nick that I had hoped, but it has a great moral – always give more.  It’s been my mantra for almost a month, and I must say, it is making choices easier!bakersdozenblog1
  3. Believe.  I still believe in Santa.  I’m 40.  I’ve experienced Christmas magic in many ways, and to me, Santa is real.  St. Nick is making appearances around the celebration of Our Lord’s birth.  From the random gifts my husband seems to get almost every year – not from me, to our son getting his stocking from Santa the first time he sat on his lap, I believe Santa is not a legend or myth, but in some way, real.  Our little boy started to understand “Santa” this year.  He asked for a “Big Blaze and a Little Blaze”.  When he woke up Christmas morning, he asked, “Did Santa come”?  This excitement brings such magical joy to our household!  It’s fun.  It’s special.  It’s exciting, and like faith, it is a gift!believe1
  4. Enjoy the Little Things! For the first time, I saw our son enjoy the ripping open the presents.  Tearing that wrapping paper is FUN!  I may love or hate what’s inside – but how happy am I to open a gift that’s not just in a gift bag!  Opening presents is so fun!
  5. Life was fun before the internet, Ipad, smartphone, etc. Not that I don’t see the beauty in these inventions!  Last week an ER trip was made bearable because of youtube videos on my phone.  But our son is only 3 years old, and I’m trying my best to limit screen time as much as possible.  He is naturally drawn to the ipad, my phone, everyone else’s phone, the tv, etc.  My husband and I want him to experience creative play through discovery and imagination in many of the ways we remember and cherish from our childhood.  I’m so happy to report that out of all the gifts Santa brought, Xavier’s favorite are the slinky, Hungry, Hungry Hippos and a cash register toy!  Even my dad got in on the slinky down the stairs action this holiday!  What a gift of nostalgia!  How happy it makes me to have some good old fashion fun!  I even bought my husband the Perfect Partners game (kind of like a newlywed/ how well do you know your spouse game).  We played it with our neighbors and had a great time!hungryhippos
  6. Christmas is a Season – not a day! – I feel like our culture, with the pressure on social media, makes us feel like we have to do a litany of things by December 25th.  December 25th is the first day of the Christmas season.  We don’t stress out about getting out to see all the Christmas lights before Christmas.  Last year we did the tour driving around town on New Years Eve – and it was great!  There’s so much relief and peace in knowing that Christmas is a season, not a day.  We’ll get to see our family, we’ll get to see the lights, and hey, if we want to bake Christmas cookies again – we’ll do that too!  No stress – enjoy the time, and throw away the check list!
  7. Siblings are an amazing blessing. I am the oldest of five.  My husband is one of four.  We do “pollyannas” or “secret santas” with our families instead of buying each and every person a Christmas gift.  This is a way to save each other money, but also ensures that at some point, we all get together to exchange gifts.  Matt and I both love our brothers and sisters and see them as not only family, but friends too.  This reminder is also encouragement for us to continue to pray for and be open to at least one sibling for our son.  We have been home study ready for almost a year, and hope that soon we will be blessed with another child!  You can help us spread the word by sharing our website! Matt and Amy hope to adopt siblings2015
  8. Rest.  Rest and DON’T FEEL GUILTY! – We had two family parties Christmas day, two more family parties the day after Christmas, and two extended family parties on Dec. 27th.  How lucky are we to be invited to so many holiday get togethers!  I love our families – from parents to aunts, uncles and cousins.  But, we were exhausted.  On the morning of Dec. 28th my son woke up and therefore I woke up.  I could have slept for five more hours.  But . . . such is a mother’s life. He wanted me to carry him downstairs, and I did.  I did until I fell.  I tried to fall in a way that he wouldn’t get hurt, but landed on my right foot in a way that made me yelp and wake up Matt.  It hurt.  I ended up going back to bed and Matt stayed up with our little guy.  When I woke up I could barely walk on it.  We went to church and I realized the pain wasn’t going away, and I needed to stay off of it. I called our Aunts and told them we weren’t going to make it to either party.  Confession: I was thankful.  I was thankful that I had to sit on my couch and go nowhere.  Perhaps next time I can just say, “we need a day to decompress” without needing a physical injury to slow me down!
  9. Having a Loving Husband is the Best Gift of All! Matt bought me a few awesome gifts (like a very warm coat), happily agreed to go on an adventure into the city on a rainy day, wrapped presents like a pro, put batteries in everything, waited on me hand and foot when I hurt myself, and gave me lots of opportunities to sleep! And, as I am typing this he just brought me a snack (LOVE HIM)!  He is so kind and generous – I need to remember this when he drives me crazy!!MattChristmasedit

Two disclosures before I start: first, this post contains affiliate links; second, I am one of those “impossible” people!

Only how many days until Christmas??  It’s crunch time!  Here are some gift ideas if you feel stuck!

  1.  A soft, comfy, throw blanket.  I bought one for myself the first time I went Christmas shopping this year.  My mother-in-law bought me one last year and it’s the softest blanket ever! I have slept with it every night this year!  I have gotten throw blankets for my husband in the past, and he says that I “always get the softest blankets”.  I got one for my grandmother last year.  One size fits all!  And look – here’s one on sale on Amazon – and Prime shipping! throwblanketamazon
  2. A whole lot of Lottery tickets! My grandmother LOVES the scratch off lottery tickets.  So this year, I bought her a bunch of them, and I am using clothes pins to “hang” them on a piece of yarn.  I will wrap the string of yarn in a box and I’m pretty sure it will be her favorite present.  I certainly hopes she wins big!lotterytix
  3. GIFT CARDS – I feel like we love to get them, but don’t love giving them.  We fear that it looks lazy.  But who doesn’t LOVE a gift card?  There’s always something we wish we had gotten, but didn’t.  With a gift card, we can go get it.  Visa gift cards are great, but so are “store” specific ones.  I love a Barnes and Nobles gift card.  If I get one, I have an excuse to walk around that store for an hour – by myself.  I might even finish a whole cup of coffee while it’s hot.  And if you are shopping for a woman, and know where she gets her hair done – JACKPOT.  Get her a gift certificate to her salon.  Getting your hair done is so expensive – but we all get it done!  T.J Maxx . . .another store that is so fun to shop at . . . I could go on.  I will suggest some “add ons” next if you feel like you can’t just give a gift card.
  4. Gift Card with some “add ons” – For men, skip the tie and tools.  If the man likes tools, give him a gift card to Home Depot.  I feel like giving a man tools is like giving a woman make up.  They’re not all the same, let them pick it out.  However, a nice add on for a man is a scarf, coffee (if they have a Keurig, k-cups are awesome gifts), and chocolate.  Also, if a man loves to golf, find out where they golf the most and get them a gift certificate for that course!  Add ons for women can include socks (as add ons, please don’t give this as a gift and that’s all)!  We all have the sock problem – we can’t find matches!  I’m wearing socks that don’t match as I type!  Other add ons are of course wine, and chocolate.  Add a Christmas ornament to hang on the wine bottle – one that reminds you of that person to make the gift personal.  And remember, if you would like it, most likely someone else would too!godivachoc
  5. A photo album with pictures in it – The dollar store sells the little ones that fit in a pocket book! You can also get bigger, nicer albums on amazon (still time for 2-day shipping).  People love pictures of themselves – the selfie stick is a thing – need I say more??  If you are on Facebook, you can easily get pics of you and this certain someone.  Go to your friend’s page, click the 3 dots next to “message” and click “see friendship”.  You’ll then see a bunch of pics that you are both tagged in!  Most places will let you print pictures out from Facebook (CVS, Target, Walgreens, etc.).
  6. An experience –  This can be written in a card, no prep work has to be done (besides, you’ll have to find a date that works best for both of you).  Write in the card that you would love to spend a day together, so you’ll pay for lunch and a movie.  You can probably think of many other ideas, but here are a few:* wine tasting; *a live show; * shopping; *out for coffee and lunch,*do something “touristy”; paint and drink wine night; hike; etc.
  7. Anything Fair Trade – These gifts are mainly crafts, coffee and chocolate – but with an added bonus of doing a good deed for those in need.  Bread for Life is another fair trade organization that offers many gift options and expedited shipping, since time is running out!

What did I miss?  If you have an idea, please comment!  There are people reading this that need help 🙂 !  Remember to stay Merry and Jolly!!!
